Anyone Can Get Poisoned and Everyone Needs the Poison Center

I was looking forward to celebrating Cinco de mayo with friends one Saturday night and was preparing a jalapeno cheddar corn bread to bring along to the party. I finished making it, popped it in the oven to bake, cleaned up and sat down on the couch to rest. I had a headache and so I massaged my temples to ease the tension I felt. Then the burning started. It was intense.

My face felt like it was on fire and I realized then that I had not washed my hands thoroughly after cleaning up the jalapeno peppers.

Working at the poison center I knew to try milk soaks, mayonnaise and butter. I tried everything and nothing seemed to work! That’s when I called the poison center. Kathy the poison specialist patiently and compassionately explained that I needed to use full fat dairy products in order to ease the stinging pain on my face. All I had was nonfat and low fat versions – no wonder they weren’t working! My husband immediately went to the corner store and bought full fat mayonnaise.

I put it all over my face and went to the Cinco de mayo party happy but a little shiny from the mayonnaise.

Of course my friends asked, “You know we love you no matter what, but what’s wrong with your face?” I told them the story of what happened and we had a good laugh over it. I was very grateful for Kathy’s expertise and the services of the poison center.
